The digital ignition system ZDG3.23 replaces existing breaker points and advancer by purely electronic components. The measurement is carried out by optoelectronic devices (photoelectric cells), because only light barriers produce a uniform, independent speed signal and thus also all calculations can be executed with much greater precision. Unlike other ignition systems, each cylinder has its own self-contained ignition, i.e. two microcontrollers for two cylinders, hence two light barriers. This has the advantage that the ignition timing for each cylinder is calculated separately exactly. To protect the coils after engine stop, the ignition current is switched off after approx. 5 seconds.
